Schemmer Attends Ribbon Cutting and Open House for UnityPoint Health – Grinnell Regional Medical Center
Schemmer’s Karl Person, AIA, LEED AP, attended a ribbon cutting ceremony and open house for the newly renovated emergency center at UnityPoint Health, Grinnell Regional Medical Center (GRMC), Brownell Emergency Center in Grinnell, Iowa.
Schemmer was retained by GRMC to provide architectural, civil and structural engineering design for the renovation of 4,300 SF and an addition of 870 SF to the existing emergency department at the hospital. The new emergency center has four private patient rooms and two trauma bays featuring expandable space.
“We welcomed hundreds of donors and local residents to our open house on Wednesday. Now we are ready to care for individuals’ needs in the modern facility,” said Doris Rindels, GRMC’s interim CEO. “The exceptional space now matches the experienced and talented staff who provide emergency care to all who enter our doors.”
Sister Cecilia and Sister Joanna from Benedictine Sisters of Virginia (BSV) visited Schemmer’s Des Moines Office for a virtual reality (VR) experience of their new replacement monastery in Bristow, Virginia. They reviewed their chapel design utilizing a VR headset and explored the space, as well as the acoustics of the room. Schemmer’s Shane Larsen, AIA, Josh Murphy, BPAC, John Bloom, AIA, LEED AP, Kira Strong-Gonzalez. Assoc. AIA and Brad Farmer where on hand for the meeting.
Schemmer was hired for a facility assessment of the 124-acre property to enable leadership of the BSV to meet current and future needs of its religious community while making optimal use of its buildings and land. The project consists of two design phases. Design phase one consists of a replacement monastery on the east side of BSV’s campus, which includes full design services through design development. Design phase two includes full design services from design development through construction administration for the replacement monastery and a guest house located on the east side of the campus. The basis for design is equal to assisted living while providing flexibility for conversion if the Sisters intend to divest the property in the future.
Schemmer Mentioned on Cathedral of the Risen Christ School’s Website Regarding the Alumni Way Project
Schemmer was mentioned on Cathedral of the Risen Christ Elementary School’s website on a page discussing The Alumni Way addition.
What started out as a simple canopy addition a few years ago morphed into a much large project last fall when the school decided to embark on a multi-faceted project that addressed a number of items needing attention.
Schemmer assisted early on with fund raising imagery used for various grant applications and individual “asks” that the administration was pursuing. Along with the imagery that suggested a strong visual presence to the facility, preliminary floorplan studies were conducted that looked at enhancing security, increasing visibility to the updated front plaza from the office areas, and providing additional tutoring and educational spaces for a number of new programs.
Schemmer is currently conducting geotechnical and site survey work for the new addition, with an anticipated groundbreaking this fall.
The Cathedral thanked Schemmer’s Michael Sinclair, AIA, NCARB and the firm for their dedication to the project.
