The Plaza Retail Complex, Mid-America Center

Council Bluffs, Iowa

Client:
CMK Development, LLC

Schemmer was selected to design The Plaza Retail Complex which sits directly across from the Mid-America Center (MAC). This complex includes four similar structures, all being single-story with bay depths that vary between 80 feet and 100 feet. The angulated form of the buildings allows for great flexibility and diversity in dividing the sizes of the lease spaces, and provides for unique, interesting and creative lease space configurations and designs. These single-level retail buildings help provide a human scale to the large arena/convention center. At the same time, the buildings provide a strong visual focus to the MAC facility by means of the long promenade extending to the southwest, with excellent visibility of the MAC and the retail shops from surrounding streets and the Interstate. The retail buildings have entrances set back from the canopy overhangs, and the building corners along the pedestrian malls have vertical elements that help provide diversity and identifiable landmarks along the pedestrian promenade. The color of the glass and masonry trim harmonizes with the MAC structure.
