City of Omaha / Omaha Public Library
The design of the Washington Library renovation and addition incorporated sensitivity to the original building, and integrates an inviting character to the building. The concept was to add "sparkle," elements that elicit life, activity, learning-is-fun atmosphere - both inside and out. This project combines state-of-the art library planning and technology with a structure that makes a significant contribution to the community. Much of the library’s mission revolves around programs and activities for youth. The design incorporates separate youth and young adult areas, along with the more traditional library spaces.
Brick, glass, steel and wood are the main materials for the building. A new atrium and skylights were incorporated into the design. A reading and sculpture garden was incorporated into the southeast corner of the site. This area serves as an outdoor classroom complimenting the youth and community programs.
