Avoca Downtown Buildings

Avoca, Iowa

During the last two years, Schemmer has served as a consulting and design agent on behalf of the City of Avoca, Iowa, developing an inventory of Avoca’s Downtown buildings and providing design solutions for each building in the two-block area. The designs were used as part of a grant application for implementation of the designs. Currently, Schemmer has completed nine storefront renovations and is continuing with more participating building owners. The purpose is to improve the aesthetic and actual condition of the downtown to encourage pedestrians and commerce. Avoca also commissioned Schemmer to study possible reuse of the former Avoca Hotel, including ADA (Americans with Disability Act) compliance.
