Sitting on a 90-acre site, the campus serves 750 veterans and qualifying family members. Overall, this project includes four phases and is targeted for LEED® Gold Certification.

Schemmer incorporated the following SUSTAINABLE ELEMENTS into the design of Iowa Veterans’ Home:

  • Creative renovation design of existing buildings to extend their useful lives
  • Higher-efficiency windows, lighting, cooling, heating and plumbing
  • Heat transfer recovery systems to lower heating expenses
  • Rain Gardens
  • Pervious paving
  • Bio-swales to filter pollution and sediment from runoff
  • Detention basins to capture, channel and reuse water
  • Sensors to control lighting
  • Daylighting
  • Carpet and finishes with recycled and non-toxic content, or using regional sources of manufacture. 
  • Low VOC Paint
  • Reduce construction waste, with fewer materials sent to landfills
