U.S. Hwy. 34 Dual Bridges

Des Moines County, Iowa

Client:
Iowa Department of Transportation

This challenging project consisted of two 6-span, variable width, variable skew, interchange structures and was designed under an on-call bridge design contract. Each structure supports either an entrance or exit ramp, along with a minimum 15m wide minimum roadway. One structure carries eastbound traffic and the other westbound traffic, over existing U.S. Hwy. 34 and BNSF Railroad. The steel piling supporting the stub abutments were designed considering significant drag down forces.

Some sections were developed along a new alignment, while others used the existing highway. As part of the project, Schemmer designed a two-lane, four-span bridge across the Skunk River.
