Schemmer developed Educational Specifications (program) and design for expansion and renovation of the multi-story, 42,500 SF elementary school. The programming process indicated a need for a relocated and enlarged library/media center, addition of a SPED/ESL classroom and computer lab, relocated and larger administration area and complete renovation of the existing school, including a geothermal heat pump system, new HVAC system, electrical, lighting and technology. A storm shelter was also incorporated into the renovation of the existing facility.
The existing heat-only mechanical system was replaced with a new geothermal heat pump system that provided individual heating and cooling control to all classroom and office spaces. The new geothermal heat pump optimizes energy performance to greatly reduce energy costs, utilizing the earth, a renewable resource, as the energy source. The design increased ventilation effectiveness and greatly reduced energy costs. The heat pumps were located in closets to accommodate maintenance. Fresh air requirements for the new facility were satisfied with a new energy recovery system. A new direct digital control system was also provided.
