The Nebraska Department of Roads (NDOR) and the City of Lincoln are planning improvements for the U.S. Highway 6/Sun Valley Boulevard corridor so that it can handle increased traffic projected for the future. NDOR and the City are working with The Schemmer Associates and Carter & Burgess to conduct a location study and environmental assessment of the corridor, from West “O” Street to Cornhusker Highway.
The project is
in the study stage only, with current plans for construction
tentatively planned some time after 2010. The actual construction
schedule depends on funding availability. Environmental AssessmentAll public transportation projects that receive federal funding, including US-6/Sun Valley Boulevard, must comply with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA). An Environmental Assessment (EA) is being prepared to comply with NEPA on this project. The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) is the decision-making agency for this document. The EA evaluates the impacts that various roadway alternatives will have on the natural and built environment. It considers the project’s expected effects on the environment, assessing impacts to homes, businesses, parks, traffic, water resources, hazardous waste sites and natural habitats. The study helps public officials to make well-informed decisions by giving consideration to the people and environment affected by those decisions.
