“Children’s Square’s new residential treatment complex nears completion”
Schemmer’s Children Square U.S.A. project located at North Sixth Street and Avenue E in Council Bluffs, Iowa is nearing completion. According to Carol Wood, Children’s Square president and CEO, they have a license to occupy the building effective August 18.
The project was handled by Schemmer, Lund-Ross Constructors and Project Advocates.
“It’s been a wonderful team,” Wood said. “It been on budget or under budget.”
Clients and board members recently toured the facility, and parents and alumni will have the opportunity over the next few weekends.
“When the kids came in, they were just in awe,” Wood said.
The 23,880 SF complex includes three cottages within a single structure, two for boys and one for girls, as well as a shared multipurpose space. An existing girl’s cottage on-site will continue to remain in service. Features were chosen with safety, supervision and security in mind to provide care for children with significant emotional and behavioral challenges.
The cottages have a total of 54 beds, but at this time Children’s Square is only licensed for 42 residents. Wood stated that it gives flexibility to group residents according to age, conditions, interests or other factors. If the state approved a higher limit the facility would serve additional youth.
Schemmer provided Master Planning, Architectural Design, Interior Design, Structural, Mechanical, Electrical and Civil Engineering services for the project.
