Schemmer's Molly Macklin Celebrates Columbian Elementary School's 2019 National Blue Ribbon School Award

Schemmer’s Molly Macklin, AIA, and project architect for Columbian Elementary School's new replacement school, was on hand to help the school celebrate the 2019 National Blue Ribbon School.

2019 National Blue Ribbon School Award

The National Blue Ribbon Schools Program recognizes public and private elementary, middle, and high schools based on their overall academic excellence. Every year the U.S. Department of Education seeks out and celebrates great American schools, schools demonstrating that all students can achieve to high levels.

The National Blue Ribbon School award affirms the hard work of students, educators, families, and communities in creating safe and welcoming schools where students master challenging content.

Blue Ribbon Art Installation

To commemorate this achievement, Macklin was commissioned to design and fabricate a blue ribbon art installation to recognize all of Columbian Elementary School’s 2019 students and staff.

“Principal McGee asked if I had any ideas and the first thing that came to mind was a puzzle,” said Macklin.

“Puzzles are made up of uniquely shaped pieces that fit together to form a whole image. Like a puzzle, all of the students came together to achieve this award.”

The installation is made of laser cut wood pieces and each student and staff’s name is etched into a puzzle piece. Together they form a large blue ribbon.

Macklin Named Honorary Cobra

During the unveiling of the new blue ribbon art installation, Columbian Elementary School also surprised Macklin for all her efforts in the design of their new school and thoughtful custom art installations by making her an honorary Cobra.

This honor is not easy to receive. Columbian’s 2019-2020 Fifth Grade Class authored a detailed document following their “Make it COUNT” acronym to express the Columbian values and reasons why she has earned the honorary Cobra title.

  • C - Community Partnerships

“Ms. Molly created a comfortable learning atmosphere. A comfortable learning environment encourages us to keep working hard and achieve at the highest levels. She listened to our ideas, down to the smallest detail. Seeing her cooperation with us helps us see what we can be capable of when we work together and makes us all try harder in what we do. We can achieve anything through community partnerships.

Columbian Elementary provides a once in a lifetime learning experience, every day, and Ms. Molly, you are one of the reasons we can say that. You are a Cobra because of your amazing contributions. You make it COUNT. Thank you!”

Going Above and Beyond

At Schemmer, we are infusing the design and construction process with a collaborative spirit that forges a unified sense of purpose and confidence among all involved. It begins with designing a project that meets our client’s goals before a single shovel of dirt is turned over, and doesn’t end until what’s been put to paper is included in the final build.

But it doesn’t stop there, we are committed to meeting and exceeding our client’s expectations on every project we touch. In an effort to not only provide first-class architecture, engineering and construction field services, but to positively impact the communities in which we live, work and play.

Schemmer is proud to be an Omaha Public Schools project partner for the new Columbian Elementary School. It’s special projects like the art installation that illustrates the high level of service and initiative that Schemmer gives to our clients. At the end of the day, it’s about providing the best possible environment for students to learn at their highest potential. Schemmer is proud to help empower our leaders of tomorrow and make every minute spent in their new facility COUNT.
