Schemmer’s Columbian Elementary School Project Awarded Learning By Design’s Outstanding Project 2020
Schemmer’s Omaha Public Schools’ Columbian Elementary School project was awarded the Learning By Design Magazine’s Outstanding Project 2020 in the New Early Childhood School/Elementary School category. The project was featured on page 49 of the Learning By Design Magazine Fall 2020 Edition. The Learning By Design jury judges each project on a set of seven contemporary education facility design criteria. Consequently, the projects designated as “Outstanding” exhibited many design attributes worthy of emulation. In other words, they provide great examples of the hard work and investments made by communities across the country.
Columbian Elementary School Project
From little seeds grow mighty trees. That is to say, this is exactly what transpired at Columbian Elementary School. The input of the school stakeholders, which included the District, Columbian students, staff and community, proved to be the catalyst that helped shape the design of their new 69,000 SF, state-of-the-art school.
Early in the design process reading proved to be fundamental to Columbian’s identity, history and educational programs. Based on the students’ request for more books and a larger library, Schemmer’s design team made the library the central focus of the replacement school. As a result, the design team delivered “The Learning Tree,” an eye-catching two-story tree. Above all, it is the central focus at the heart of the building located within an environment meant for exploring. Readers can enjoy their favorite book in thoughtful, quiet spaces carved out for them within the trunk of the tree. In addition, they can take advantage of the varied and flexible learning spaces within the tree’s canopy.
