Murray Viaduct Construction: In Progress

Schemmer was retained by the Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT) to provide preliminary and final design services for a replacement bridge, the Murray Viaduct, located on NE-1. The bridge will span the Union Pacific Railroad in Murray, Nebraska. The new structure is a two-span continuous welded-plate-girder bridge, 269-foot in length, with unbalanced spans and drilled shafts for a foundation. The bridge design utilizes specialized Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC) techniques to reduce the traffic impacts on NE-1.

Murray Viaduct Current Status

Construction began in the spring of 2020 for the new two-span bridge over the UPRR leading into Murray. Although the bridge is currently under construction, crews expect the bridge to be open to traffic in the spring of 2022. Design tasks include:

  • Phased construction details
  • Large grade separation differential
  • Precast substructure units
  • Self-supporting structural walls
  • Use of geofoam earth fills
