What's the most exciting thing you're working on right now?
We're doing work for the City of Tulsa on the Turley interceptor, a wastewater project. It collects a lot of sewage and we're doing a replacement of that line to increase capacity and the long-term serviceability of that line.
We're also doing a project for a church group in Lake Charles, Louisiana. That's a great one to be involved with.
How do you feel your work enhances your community?
I've been doing this a little over 30 years now. Everything we do interacts with the public. You design a subdivision with 200 lots, that's 200 families that move in. There's a lot of impact. It's fun to go back and look at those projects and see how they've built over the years. See kids out playing in the neighborhoods. That's a benefit. As you drive down a highway that you worked on it's amazing to see that interaction of how many people may have traveled that over the years. Those are really a big plus.
What is your favorite or the most rewarding part of your job?
My favorite part of my job is working with people. It's something I've loved to do from when I was very little. The ability to meet and interact with clients, other coworkers, cities and municipalities that we work with, state agencies, even federal agencies that we deal with. That's really the most important thing, is to be able to work with people.
How do you measure success?
The way I measure success is not really based on a huge successful project or something like that. I measure success individually on the smaller goals and ambitions that I have. So it's not really based on one reward. It's based on a whole bunch of little rewards.
Do you have a favorite memory at Schemmer?
I'm a little new to the firm, but it's been great to be here. The memories that I have are meeting each and every person that is part of the significant team we have at Schemmer, from corporate staff to marketing staff, to each of the individuals in our different offices, civil and transportation and architecture. Those are memories that will carry me a long way because I think it's great.
What does your life look like outside of work?
I am happily married to my wife, Shari. We're going on 31 years in April. We have three kids. My oldest son is in the air force and married and has our only grandson. I just love my family. That's the biggest thing. Biggest part of my life. And I wouldn't mind sneaking in a fishing trip.
