Doug Burchett has returned to Schemmer 20 years after first working in our Omaha office as a Survey Crew Chief from 2002 - 2005. Burchett has started a new venture with Schemmer and is heading up our newly launched CIM Team.
Doug's interest in survey and engineering design began late in high school in Malvern, IA. An assignment from his senior year set him on the path of pursuing the industry.
"For Government class, I had to go to a city council meeting. A city councilman and the city engineer was giving an elaborate project overview and it really kind of caught my ear and my eye. So I stuck around after the meeting and talked to the guy and he offered me a summer job. So that was my in," said Burchett.
Doug has 25 years of industry experience. He has worked under several disciplines within engineering and traveled all over the US.
"I've been in the industry since 1996. It's all I've ever done, but I've been back and forth between survey and engineering design. So I've had the opportunity to work in lots of different environments, lots of different places, and with lots of different people."
Doug is now applying his experience from survey and design to a new way of modeling: CIM or Civil Information Modeling.
"CIM is very similar to BIM. BIM is primarily used for architectural projects or vertical projects. CIM is pretty much the exact same thing. It's just on the civil side. It's a way of modeling every structure and all utilities within a project."
After 20 years, Doug says he's happy to be back at Schemmer where he feels our company culture speaks volumes.
"There are lots of people that are still here when I was here previously. That says a lot about the company. It says a lot about the culture. Ultimately, it's the people and the culture that brought me back to Schemmer."
