Project Details

Schemmer provided streetscape enhancements to the 11th Street corridor in downtown Lincoln, NE from A Street to Lincoln Mall. The project consisted of narrowing the street width at intersections to reduce the time needed for pedestrians to cross 11th Street. This was accomplished by constructing curb bulb-outs at each intersection. In conjunction with the bulb-outs, bio-swales were constructed to filter the storm runoff from the adjacent streets. The bio-swales were landscaped with native plants in a subsequent phase. In addition, on-street bike lanes were included throughout the length of the project that connect to existing on-street bike lanes at the south end of downtown. At the intersection of 11th and D Streets, a mini-roundabout was constructed to provide traffic calming to the neighborhood and remove the need for four-way stop signs. The project was funded with a federal EPA grant and local funds.
