The city of Norfolk, NE contracted Schemmer to design the plans for the complete reconstruction of Benjamin Avenue from 1st to 13th Street.
The pavement on the stretch of Benjamin Avenue from 1st Street to 13th Street had deteriorated over time. That and a high crash rate was causing traffic problems along this roadway. Schemmer's design includes improvements to both of these issues.
Schemmer's reconstruction design of the roadway not only includes replacing the pavement, but to also widen Benjamin Avenue to add middle turn lanes. These new turn lanes will help mitigate the high crash rate problem by taking turning traffic out of driving lanes and providing easer access to local businesses on Benjamin Avenue.
Other components of the design include new curbs and gutters, storm sewers, widened pedestrian sidewalks, enhanced landscaping/streetscaping and new street lighting. After significant coordination regarding utilities, many power lines are being buried to help with further beautification of Benjamin Avenue.
PROGRESS SPOTLIGHT: BENJAMIN AVENUE
The project is about halfway done as of late November 2022. Most of the construction of the new roadway and sidewalks is finished from Riverside Blvd to 1st Street. The process on the first half of the project included tearing up the old roadway, putting down a good foundation, and laying the new concrete roadway. It also included the widening of the pedestrian sidewalks. Most of the new roadway is open now with the exception of an area near continuing work on a culvert.
Work on the second half of the project will continue through the winter and the project is expected to be completed by November 2023.
