The sound of water trickling down a calming bed of rocks, the sweet fragrance of seasonal flowers, the tranquility of spiritual stained glass – all can be found near Alegent Creighton Health Mercy Hospital’s intensive care unit at its healing garden in Council Bluffs, Iowa.
Schemmer worked with the Alegent management staff and the vision of the former nursing director for Mercy Hospital’s ICU, Martha Binkerd, who passed away in 2008. The collaborative effort between them made the garden a reality. The 6,500-square-foot garden was completed in 2011. Funded by private donations from the community, including the Mercy employees, the healing garden is located near the hospital’s intensive care unit and chapel. The trees, benches, bricks and even the stained glass were gifts or pledges from community partners and local citizens.
