Schemmer Sponsors Inaugural Engineers Without Borders – NU Chapter Run/Walk

22

Schemmer was a sponsor at the inaugural Engineers Without Borders Run/Walk held on Saturday, August 16, 2014 in Elmwood Park. More than 100 participants attend the event organized by The University of Nebraska Student Chapter of Engineers Without Borders (EWB-NU). Participants were able to run/walk 2k to 6k.

The EWB-NU "Bucket Brigade" held the event to help support their work with the community of Kianjavato, Madagascar to address both drinking water and energy needs. The chapter has over 70 active student members at the University of Nebraska campuses in Lincoln and Omaha. Currently, EWB-NU students are working on solar energy projects to install lights in school classrooms and water supply projects to provide clean, safe drinking water to the community.

In Madagascar, as in many parts of the developing world, women typically collect river water to use for drinking and cooking. The water is collected in plastic jerrycans or buckets. In some cases, women may walk up to 3 miles (6 kilometers) daily to collect water.  By participating in the run, runners/walkers joined the “Bucket Brigade” to bring clean drinking water to Kianjavato.
