Schemmer’s Children’s Square U.S.A. Academic Center Project Breaks Ground

Schemmer's Mark Higgins, AIA, LEED AP, was on hand for the Children's Square U.S.A. Academic Center Renovation and Addition groundbreaking on Thursday, October 25, 2018. The first shovel of dirt was turned over for the renovation and addition that will provide students with an enhanced learning environment. This is the second project in the Better Spaces, Brighter Futures Capital Campaign. Schemmer also assisted with the Children's Square U.S.A. Residential Treatment Complex in 2018 .

The Academic Center's 8,600 SF renovation and 3,200 SF addition will transform one of the two remaining original facilities on Children's Square's campus. The early 20th-Century structure, built in 1913, has served many purposes and will have a complete interior makeover, new mechanical and electrical systems, the addition of an automatic sprinkler system, various ADA improvements, additional restrooms and a storm shelter.

The Academic Center is a unique educational program providing intensive individual support for students with severe emotional and behavioral needs. The school serves students who need a specialized program to meet their educational needs. Specialized instruction and services, structured emotional and behavioral support and emphasis on academics are the hallmarks of the Academic Center.
