Consider many facets of architects to get the home or office of your dreams
Schemmer’s Mark Higgins, AIA, LEED AP, was quoted in the Midlands Business Journal regarding how to choose the right architect for you amongst the sea of qualified candidates.
“Every architecture firm and architect brings their own combination of skills, expertise, interests and values to its projects,” Higgins said, “It is important to find a firm and architect who is a good match with your goals, your concept of the project, your personality and your budget.”
Higgins says it’s useful to consult with design professionals if you need help defining the project prior to a final design agreement.
“Referrals from colleagues and acquaintances, especially those who are associated with the design and construction industry, are good resources to make a short list of potential firms to consider,” Higgins said, “Contact these architects or firms to ask for information, qualifications and references.”
Recent experience and a proven track record of success in timeliness and budget are good things to explore.
“In discussions with potential firms, consider whether good questions were asked and if the architect was engaged with developing solutions to the design challenges,” he said, “Enthusiasm and responsiveness are hallmarks of an effective architect.”
It’s also important to factor in the background of the architects’ structural knowledge and education to ensure their credibility. Higgins also referenced the national AIA website, aia.org, for tools and resources on everything from assisting clients with selection of an architect to information on contract documents.
