Schemmer’s Michael Sinclair, AIA, and Nick May, Assoc. AIA, helped to design and assemble one of the 2018 PARK|ing| Day installations for the University of Nebraska – Lincoln (UNL)’s College of Architecture PARK|ing| DAY.
PARK|ing| DAY is an annual global event that falls on the third Friday of September. Citizens, artists and activists collaborate to temporarily transform parking stalls into temporary public places. The mission of PARK|ing| Day is to call attention to the need for more urban open space, to generate critical debate around how public space is created and allocated, and to improve the quality of urban human habitat … at least until the meter runs out!
Each year, the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Lincoln sponsors the event for the UNL College of Architecture, allowing students to occupy roughly a dozen stalls for the entire day to design, fabricate and install them in any way they see fit. The student exhibits are located around UNL’s city campus. Sinclair and May have spearheaded this for AIA Lincoln the past two years. Sinclair serves as the AIA Lincoln Chapter President and May is a member of the Chapter.
The AIA Lincoln exhibit this year stripped down the car to its bare essentials: extremely comfortable seating and played homage to the golden days of the American Drive-In.
Mohawk Group and Office Interiors & Design sponsored the installation.
