The City of Seward, Nebraska, contracted Schemmer to prepare plans for the reconstruction of Waverly Road from Highway 15 to the Plum Creek Bridge.
Previously a two-lane section with roadside ditches and a turf shoulder, portions of Waverly Road were failing and in need of repair. It was rebuilt as a three-lane section with a new curb and gutter system and a sidewalk on the north side of the road.
Project Spotlight: Waverly Road in Seward, Nebraska
This reconstruction project coordinated with the Seward Trail project, which is currently being designed by Schemmer using federal funds.
The roadway improvements took precedence over the trail construction, which will be located on the south side of Waverly Road. The contractor for Waverly Road built the earth shoulder where the future trail will be located.
Coordination with Seward Elementary and developers was an important aspect of the design and construction. Road construction primarily took place when school was not in session. A wellness center is planned also for the north side of Waverly Road, and Schemmer coordinated with the developer to construct access points and improvements for this new development.
