Bringing Ideas to Life: How 3D Printing is Changing the Way We Design

June 12, 2025 • All, News

Lincoln, Neb. – At Schemmer, model-making is back, and it’s faster, sharper, and smarter than ever. Thanks to our new 3D printer, what used to take days with an X-Acto blade and chipboard now takes just a few hours, and delivers far more than just a physical model. It brings clarity, excitement, and even a little bit of wonder to the design process.

But let’s back up.

“There was a time when physical models were a key part of architectural design,” said Architect Michael Sinclair. “They helped clients really see the totality of a project. But over time, as drawing software sped up, model-making fell behind. It just couldn’t keep pace.”

Now, 3D printing is closing that gap and then some. Architectural Designer Ilja Sanio pointed out that even a small, simplified massing model can shift a client’s entire understanding of a space. “We live in a 3D world,” he said. “When someone holds a model in their hands, turns it around, sees how light plays off its surfaces…that’s powerful. You don’t get that from a screen.”

Intern Alana Kerr agreed. On one early project, the team printed the site’s topography and layered on various massing options. “It gave us something to physically move and explore,” she said. “That process was so valuable for us and for the client.”

A Tool for Exploration, Not Just Visualization

While some might think of 3D printing as a flashy tech trend, everyone at the table agreed: it’s here to stay. “It’s not just about creating a pretty model,” said Michael. “It’s a tool for quality design. It helps us discover what’s working—and what’s not—earlier in the process.”

Ilja added that the precision is unmatched. “We’re talking fractions of millimeters. You just can’t do that by hand.”

Beyond Design: Communication, Marketing, and More

It’s not just architects who benefit. Contractors and clients alike are seeing value. When a complex roof detail on a pavilion wasn’t translating well in 2D drawings, the team printed a model. Problem solved.

“We’re just scratching the surface with what we can do with this technology,” said Ilja.

A Draw for the Next Generation

For younger professionals entering the field, access to 3D printing is becoming an expectation. “In school, we didn’t have time for chipboard models,” said Alana. “But we’re excited about tools that let us explore more and dream bigger.”

And for Schemmer, that excitement is contagious.

“We’re learning every day,” Michael said. “The printer has already helped us do more with less time. And as the technology evolves, I think it’s only going to become more valuable, not just in design, but in how we work, how we communicate, and how we share what we do with those who live, work, and move through these spaces every day.”
