Corning, IA – On a late summer afternoon, nearly a hundred people gathered for a ribbon-cutting and open house at Corning Elementary School.

Parents walked with their children through brand-new hallways. Teachers opened the doors to their classrooms for the first time. Neighbors stopped to take it all in. This was more than a look at a new school. It was a glimpse into the future of Corning.

Principal Allison Thomas believes students will feel the difference the moment they walk inside. “The library is phenomenal. When you walk in, you feel welcome right away. The colors, the design, it’s an exciting, inviting space for our kids.”

That sense of possibility carries throughout the building. Classrooms were designed with flexibility at their core. Spaces where kids can learn together, break into small groups, or focus one-on-one. Teachers gain something too: room to collaborate more easily, sharing ideas that strengthen how students learn every day.

None of this happened by chance. It happened because the community believed in it. When Corning residents voted to support the bond referendum, they invested in their children and the future of their town. At the open house, Thomas said, “Families told us, ‘This was money well spent.’ That means everything.”

For Schemmer, helping make this vision real meant walking alongside the district every step of the way. “We worked closely with the Schemmer team on every decision: hallways, classrooms, paint colors. It wasn’t just their design. It became our building. And that makes it something we’re all proud of,” Thomas said.

Corning Elementary School now stands as a foundation for the future. A place where children will learn, families will gather, and a community will continue to grow stronger.
