Mitchell, SD – When the Muth Technology Center first opened in 2000, its amphitheater was designed primarily as a lecture hall. But over the years, the needs of Mitchell Technical College evolved.

The space had become more than a classroom. It had become a destination for prospective students, campus presentations, and community engagement. To better support those experiences, Mitchell Technical College partnered with Schemmer to transform the amphitheater and surrounding commons into a modern, welcoming space designed to leave a lasting first impression.

Schemmer provided architecture, interior design, engineering, and construction administration services for the renovation of approximately 8,600 square feet within the Muth Technology Center. The project included updates to the existing amphitheater, adjacent corridors, and common areas, the conversion of an existing office suite into a spacious lobby with a catering kitchen, and renovations to the building’s restroom facilities.

“The space was originally designed as a lecture hall in 2000,” said Project Manager Steve Thompson, LEED AP BD+C. “As campus needs changed, Mitchell Technical College wanted to repurpose it for presentations, recruitment, and student engagement while also refreshing worn and outdated finishes.”

The renovation extended well beyond cosmetic improvements. Updated finishes, modern electrical and technology systems, and mechanical upgrades created a more flexible environment that supports seminars, presentations, and recruitment events while enhancing the everyday student experience.

One of the most impactful design changes was transforming the former administrative office suite into a large lobby that now serves as the front door to the amphitheater.

“Creating that welcoming gathering space was one of the biggest improvements,” Thompson said. “It gives prospective students, families, and current students a place to connect before and after presentations, helping the building better support how the college uses it today.”

The renovation also plays an important role in Mitchell Technical College’s recruitment efforts. Campus visits are often built around first impressions, and the updated environment helps communicate the quality of the college’s programs before a presentation even begins.

“Visitors immediately notice the richer colors, updated finishes, and more modern features,” Thompson said. “It creates a space that feels refreshed, inviting, and representative of the college today.”

Completing a major renovation inside an active campus building required careful planning to minimize disruptions while keeping the facility operational throughout construction.
