Kansas City, MO – For more than four decades, David Greusel, FAIA, has helped shape some of the places where communities gather, celebrate, and share experiences. As Manager of Architecture and Public Assembly Venues for Convergence Design, A Schemmer Company, David brings more than 45 years of experience designing large civic and public spaces, including stadiums, arenas, and conference centers.

His path into architecture started with something simple. He always loved drawing and building things. But it was not until his first day working in a professional architecture office after graduating from Kansas State University that he realized he had found the right career.

“That’s when it hit me that I’d found my niche,” he says.

When David started in the profession, everything was drawn by hand. Over the years he has watched architecture undergo a complete shift to digital design. Today nearly every part of the process happens on computers.

“The gains in productivity have been enormous,” David says. “But I still see a lot of value in the line drawn by a human hand.”

Early in his career, David had the opportunity to work with well-known Kansas City designer Steve Abend, an experience that helped shape how he approaches design today.

“Working with Steve taught me that the search for truly strong design solutions means pushing past the obvious and the ordinary.”

That mindset carried into David’s work on public assembly venues. These projects often become defining landmarks for a community and places where people gather for sports, entertainment, conferences, and major events.

“These buildings often become a community’s living room,” David says. “They should tell the story of that community to visitors and guests.”

One project that stands out in his career is PNC Park, home of the Pittsburgh Pirates. Now more than 25 years old, it still ranks near the top of fan polls of Major League ballparks.

“That it’s stood the test of time is very gratifying,” David says. “But what really makes it special is the view of downtown Pittsburgh across the Allegheny River from almost every seat.”

While memorable views and strong design matter, David believes architecture serves a deeper purpose.

“I’m big on the concept of human flourishing,” he says. “Architecture cannot make people flourish by itself, but it can create the conditions where that can happen.”

Over the years David has also become known for helping complex projects reach consensus among large groups of stakeholders. His approach is practical.

“The key is making sure the people who have the ability to derail a project are part of the design process,” he says.

Even after decades in the field, David still finds architecture endlessly interesting.

“Every day presents new challenges and new opportunities,” he says. “You do not just learn architecture. You learn about the industries and communities you are designing for.”

Outside the office, David has another creative outlet. For 28 years he was part of the Kansas Public Radio comedy program Right Between the Ears, where he wrote sketches and songs for the long-running show. Today he and his wife Theresa enjoy traveling, and David continues to pursue another passion: photography.

“I probably have way too many cameras,” he jokes.

When asked to sum up his philosophy on architecture, David keeps it simple.

“I’m much more concerned that a building be right for its place than for its time.”
