Mitchell, SD – In mid-July, the Mitchell community got its first official glimpse of the new Mitchell High School during a public open house and the reactions said it all: wide eyes, big smiles, and plenty of “wows.”

After nearly three years in the making, the new 212,000-square-foot facility reflects the pride, effort, and teamwork of an entire community.

“It was really special to walk the site with the community and see their reactions up close,” said Tracy Mumford of Schemmer. “You could feel the excitement! So many smiles, so many people just in awe of the space.”

While the school isn’t quite finished, the open house offered an exciting preview of what’s to come. Guests explored classroom wings, a spacious commons, a two-story library, a café, art and pottery studios, and three gymnasiums, including a main facility that will seat 2,000 people.

“The main entrance makes a statement,” Mumford said. “Tall ceilings, a grand entry, a mezzanine, and a beautiful wooden staircase. It already feels like a place students, families, and teachers will be proud to call home during the school day.”

The athletic spaces also made an impression. “The athletics fields and spaces are second to none,” he said. “The locker rooms, the basketball courts, the practice fields in addition to the playing fields. This school will have everything an athlete needs to be successful.”

Beyond the design features, it was the turnout that really spoke volumes. “Easily 500 people showed up, and we were there right from the start. It was packed,” said Mumford. “That kind of turnout tells you how much this project means to the Mitchell community.”

The new high school connects directly to the existing MCTEA building and Performing Arts Center (also designed by Schemmer), forming a unified campus that supports both academics and extracurriculars. With final construction underway and opening day set for August 20th, anticipation is building.

“A project of this scale takes years of collaboration, planning, and trust,” said Mumford. “It’s been an honor to be part of something so meaningful for Mitchell.”
