Grand Island Fire Station No. 3

Grand Island Fire Station No. 3

Schemmer, in partnership with BRW Architects, is helping bring this critical piece of infrastructure to life with a full-service approach to design and engineering.

The nearly 10,000-square-foot facility will replace the existing station on the same site. To maintain uninterrupted fire protection throughout construction, the current station will remain operational until the new one is complete. Once the new station is fully functional, the existing building will be taken down.

Schemmer is providing a wide range of services for this project, including programming, project coordination, and mechanical, electrical, structural, civil, and geotechnical engineering. Our team is also delivering construction materials testing and survey services, ensuring the project meets the highest standards from the ground up.

The new three-bay station is designed to support the needs of modern firefighting. It will include six sleeping quarters, a kitchen, dining and dayroom, fitness area, captain’s and report offices, conference rooms, and all necessary support spaces for apparatus and operations. The second floor will house storage for mechanical, electrical, IT, and EMS equipment. Built with durable wood and CMU framing, supported by steel, the building also includes an ICC-500 storm shelter. The exterior will feature a blend of stone and fiber cement siding with composition shingles—balancing durability with a clean, professional look.

This new facility will enhance emergency response times and provide a safer, more functional space for firefighters to live and work. It also demonstrates the city’s long-term investment in public safety, ensuring the fire department has the tools and environment it needs to serve the community well into the future.

Construction is expected to be completed in 2025.
