Project Details
Schemmer was selected to provide architectural design, electrical, mechanical, structural and geotechnical engineering and construction administration services for Owen Industries Metal Center located on a 20+ acre greenfield site in Carter Lake, IA. The new 189,225 SF pre-engineered building is an open-bay steel fabrication facility with heavy lift cranes and office area. Space was laid out inside the building for train rails to come into the building.
The production/warehouse area includes a truck scale, automatic truck door, air compressor and lines, Cat-5 cabling and fiber and water lines. Clear span trusses are used where the coil bay intersects with the stretcher leveler bay and the slitter bay. One column is provided in the middle of each bay to support the trusses. The building accommodates two 45-ton cranes, one 15-ton crane and two 20-ton cranes with hook heights for the cranes at 25 feet. Electrical service for the facility is 480-volt for a total of 15,000 amps.
The video above features of some of the equipment in motion that is housed in the production/warehouse area, such as the stretcher leveler, which weighs close to one million pounds alone, and the Trumpf stacker crane. The stretcher leveler can take 80,000-pound coils of steel up to one inch thick and unroll it, stretching the steel with millions of pounds of force to straighten it, and cut it into flat sheets for additional work. Behind the stretcher leveler, is the Trumpf stacker crane that temporarily stores flat sheets of steel before they are automatically fed into the laser cutters. Over one million pounds of steel can be stored.
The 10,000 SF office contains five offices, a conference and break room and restrooms for 80 people. The shipping office accommodates three desks and restrooms.
