Schemmer is proud to partner with the City of York and BRW Architects on the design of the new Fire Station No. 1, a 25,000 square foot facility built to strengthen emergency services and support the York Fire Department’s mission.

From day one, our team worked closely with city leaders and fire personnel to understand what the department needs both today and in the future. We began with a careful review of the existing station, then planned a facility that supports modern operations. Schemmer provided architecture, planning, project management, and engineering across civil, structural, mechanical, electrical, and geotechnical disciplines. Keeping these services coordinated through one team helped make the entire process clearer and more efficient.

Key features of the new station include:

• A large four-door apparatus bay (125′ x 100′)
• Offices and a conference room
• Dormitories, restrooms, and a day room
• A watch room, kitchen, dining area, and laundry space
• A dedicated display area highlighting the department’s history
• On-site parking for 30 vehicles

The station meets current ABA accessibility standards and incorporates sustainable design strategies that support energy efficiency and long-term value.

Why it matters
This is more than a new facility. It is a significant investment in public safety and the long-term well-being of York. The station will help improve response times, give firefighters a better place to work and train, and create opportunities for community engagement. It is designed to grow with the community and support the department’s mission for years to come.

Schemmer is honored to support this effort and help York build a strong, safe future.
