Our latest example is a new piece of survey technology that’s helping us see what’s beneath the surface: literally.

Schemmer recently introduced an Unmanned Surface Vehicle (USV) into our suite of tools. It’s a remotely operated “boat drone” equipped with sonar and advanced navigation systems used to conduct bathymetric surveys, which measure the depth and contours of underwater terrain.

Smarter Surveys, Faster Results

CIM Manager Doug Burchett says the results have already been impressive.

“We’ve used it on two projects so far for predesign and topographic/bathymetric surveys, and the difference is the amount of data we can obtain in a much shorter time frame than traditional methods,” he said.

The USV can navigate under bridges and in other hard-to-reach areas, capturing detailed, accurate data without putting field crews in difficult or unsafe positions.

Precision Beneath the Surface

The real power of this new tool lies in its accuracy.

“We can now use RTK with this vessel to obtain near-centimeter accuracy,” Burchett explained. “We’ve field-tested the data against traditional methods, and it’s proven to be spot-on.”

That level of precision gives designers a more complete picture of site conditions, helping them make faster, more confident decisions. The richness of these data sets also opens the door for advanced modeling opportunities, including what Doug describes as “digital twins,” which are virtual models of infrastructure that can evolve alongside real-world construction.

“We’ll even be able to mount a handheld SLAM scanner on the USV to sail around existing bridge piers and capture an extra level of detail as we move into the era of digital delivery.”

The USV’s impact extends beyond the field.

“Just the data sets alone provide so much more detail for our designers,” Doug noted.

By giving engineers a richer and more accurate foundation, the technology fosters tighter collaboration between Schemmer’s survey and engineering teams, allowing everyone to move forward with clarity and confidence.
