Alliance Cemetery Committal Shelter Wind Protection Groundbreaking
On May 27, 2019, the Alliance State Veterans Cemetery held its Memorial Day ceremony and also broke ground on the Committal Shelter Wind Protection project designed by Schemmer. More than 200 people attended the ceremony and groundbreaking. The Cemetery received a $140,000 donation at the event from Veterans State Cemetery at Alliance Foundation for the construction of the Committal Shelter Windbreak.
The intent of the Committal Shelter Windbreak was to create an enclosure that blended seamlessly with the original shelter Schemmer previously designed. The chosen material palette incorporates a blend of porous and opaque surfaces and materials to maintain desired vistas through and around the site.
Alliance State Veterans Cemetery Project
Schemmer provided design for the Alliance State Veterans Cemetery that was completed in 2009. It was the first State Veterans Cemetery in Nebraska. The project was completed in two phases and occupies 20 acres with a total of 8,500 total burial sites.
Phase One
Phase One consisted of all major site-work, roadways, parking, walkways, utilities, monuments, burial plots and the irrigation system.
Phase Two
Phase Two consisted of the administration building, maintenance yard, columbarium walls, committal plaza, remaining burial sections and landscaping.
