Corning Elementary School Expansion Reaches Halfway Point
February 27, 2025 • All, Projects
Corning, Iowa – The Southwest Valley Community School District, in partnership with Schemmer, is making a major investment in its facilities with an expansion and renovation project at Corning Elementary School. Designed to create modern learning spaces, enhance safety and accessibility, and provide students and educators with an environment that supports success for years to come, this project reflects a commitment to both education and community growth.
Project Highlights
- New classroom additions on the east side will replace the aging round classroom wings, providing modern, functional spaces designed for today’s learning needs.
- An expanded early childhood education center on the west side will bring infant-to-preschool services under the same roof as the elementary school, improving access and continuity for families.
- Upgrades to the ICC 500 safe room will enhance security and storm protection, benefiting both the school and nearby ballfield spectators.
- A brand-new gymnasium will provide space for physical education, athletics, and extracurricular activities.
- Renovations to the central building and west pod will repurpose the west pod into a dedicated early childhood education area while keeping the project within budget.
- Improvements to the baseball and softball complex, including new fencing, dugouts, a press box, concessions, bleachers, and accessibility upgrades.
- A safer, more inclusive playground will replace the old wooden structure, ensuring a modern and ADA-compliant play area.
- A new fire suppression system will be installed throughout the facility to enhance safety and compliance.
A Vision for Design
The design for this project focused on maintaining the school’s original character while updating it to meet modern needs. Architect and Project Manager Seth Shannon shared his insights on the approach:
“Architecturally, we set out to maintain the horizontal language of the building with the new design, which required a wide perspective across all design disciplines to execute. I’m proud of how the new main entrance and the new library will be the architectural focal point for occupants and visitors alike.”
The new main entrance and library are set to become standout features, welcoming students, educators, and the community with a modern, cohesive aesthetic that enhances both functionality and visual appeal.
Overcoming Challenges in Renovation
Renovation projects often come with unexpected challenges, making teamwork essential to success. Shannon highlighted the importance of collaboration in navigating these obstacles:
“As with many renovation projects, existing conditions require extra care and awareness as design and construction unfolds. Solving these problems requires a shared mindset of the entire team, and I believe we had the correct design and construction management team for the task.”
This collaborative approach ensured that unexpected conditions could be addressed efficiently, with Schemmer, IMEG, and Estes Construction working closely to develop solutions that kept the project on track while maintaining design integrity and budget considerations.
Designing for the Future
Beyond the architectural and structural enhancements, this project represents an investment in the future of Corning’s students and community. Shannon reflected on the deeper meaning of designing a school that will shape generations to come:
“I find it special to positively influence small-town Iowa, knowing that their school systems are the backbone of their communities. Architecture should enhance the lives of everyone that occupies these spaces throughout the life of the facilities for generations to come.”
This vision reinforces the idea that schools are more than just buildings—they are centers for learning, growth, and community. By designing a safe, modern, and inspiring environment, the Corning Elementary School expansion ensures that students and educators have the resources they need to thrive today and in the future.
