McCook YMCA Renovation Project Breaks Ground

April 30, 2025 • All, News, Projects

McCook, Neb. – On April 17, 2025, the YMCA celebrated the start of construction with a groundbreaking event. The event brought together YMCA leadership, local partners, and neighbors to mark the beginning of something special.

The McCook YMCA has been an important part of the community for years. Now, it’s getting the updates and improvements it needs to better serve families, students, and neighbors for years to come.

Schemmer is proud to provide the concept and final design services for this $17 million project, which focuses on expanding opportunities for fitness, wellness, and connection in McCook. Updates include:

  • A bigger gymnasium with more space for recreation and activities

  • A new indoor walking track for year-round exercise

  • A modern, expanded swimming pool built to regulation length—ready for community use and school competitions

  • Improved fitness, wellness, and administrative areas for better service and comfort

  • New community spaces designed for flexibility and everyday use

Project Manager Dan Kerns says the YMCA building is over 40 years old with “antiquated systems.” He explained, “The renovation modernizes the entire building and provides an environment that fosters community and wellness.”

The design process was rooted in local input. “The visioning of the project involved members, donors, and the YMCA leadership team,” said Kerns. One specific outcome of that collaboration was the decision to fully replace the original pool. “The pool had been renovated about 15 years ago, but it had reached the end of its life cycle. It’s the only indoor pool in McCook for regulation swim meets, so it’s a vital part of the aquatics community.”

Another key design change: the main entrance. “We flipped the entrance from the east upper level to the west lower level,” Kerns noted. “This will dramatically change how members enjoy the YMCA and provide for a more functional experience.”

Construction is expected to continue through 2025. When it’s finished, the updated YMCA will be a place where everyone, young and old, can come together, stay active, and feel connected.
