Schemmer Projects to be Recognized at ACEC – Nebraska Engineering Excellence Awards

The ACEC - Nebraska has announced that three Schemmer projects will be recognized at their 2024 Engineering Excellence Awards. The three projects: Applewood Creek Trail, 120th Street, Stonegate to Roanoke Boulevard, and Union Bank & Trust New Office Building have all received Merit Awards and were featured in the Omaha World Herald.

Applewood Creek TrailApplewood Creek Trail

Schemmer provided design services for the construction of thisĀ award-winning new recreational trail along Applewood Creek between Giles Road north to the BNSF Railway existing trail under-crossing.

The 10-foot-wide concrete trail constructed a box culvert under-crossing beneath Giles Road, which was constructed under traffic to complete a vital link in the trail system within La Vista. The project also included the construction of a pedestrian bridge over Applewood Creek.

The design included developing a horizontal alignment intended to minimize impact on the existing mature trees along the creek to maintain the natural corridor while providing enhanced transportation and recreational opportunities for the citizens of La Vista and beyond.

Design services included topographic survey, geotechnical engineering, hydraulic analysis, preliminary and final trail design, bridge design and construction inspection and material testing. In addition, the public outreach was modified due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but the team, with support from the City, was able to keep the adjacent homeowners informed and maintain their support of the trail.

120th Street, Stonegate Drive to Roanoke Boulevard

Schemmer was contracted to provide design services for new roadway, storm sewers and a bridge crossing the Big Papillion Creek for a one-mile stretch between West Maple Road and Fort Street. The use of federal funding and floodplain issues required an environmental action plan and close coordination with various agencies.

The project included an environmental assessment to determine air and noise impacts, wetland delineation and mitigation, and investigation of impacts on Tranquility Park and the Knolls Golf Course. Extensive hydraulic floodplain modeling was performed to mitigate potential flood issues. Schemmer coordinated with multiple agencies on these assessments, including the Federal Highway Administration, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Nebraska Department of Transportation, Papio-Missouri River Natural Resources District and Papio Creek Coalition.

The preliminary roadway design included two horizontal alignments and three vertical alignment alternatives, and determination of mitigation measures. The bridge design included type, size and location drawings of the bridge alternatives. Schemmer also provided geotechnical testing, traffic engineering including data collection and analysis, right-of-way, drainage design and meetings with the public and key stakeholders.

Union Bank & Trust New Office Building

Union Bank & Trust New Office Building

Schemmer played a pivotal role in the successful completion of Union Bank & Trust's (UBT) new five-story building in Omaha, Nebraska. Schemmer provided essential structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, and construction materials testing services, ensuring the building's stability, safety, and overall quality throughout the entire project.

The 137,000-square-foot building boasts a welcoming lobby, state-of-the-art banking facilities, and modern office spaces for both UBT and tenant company Nelnet. The building features drive-up ATMs, teller lanes, walk-in banking services, flexible office layouts, and a two-story green wall. A nearly 5,000-square-foot terrace serves as a common area for tenants, offering space for presentations and events. The building also includes a heated underground parking garage.

Located in the Heartwood Preserve development, the new UBT building, supported by Schemmer's comprehensive services, serves as a symbol of the bank's commitment to the Omaha community and its vision for the future.
