Iowa K9 Memorial Contest
Schemmer's design was selected for The Iowa Law Enforcement K9 Memorial Contest located on the State Capitol Grounds near the current Peace Officer Memorial in Des Moines, Iowa. The memorial will:
- Recognize K9's that were killed or died in the line of duty
- Represent the dedication and commitment of all K9's that have served in Iowa law enforcement, their departments and communities that support their local K9 programs

Schemmer's Design Wins Iowa K9 Memorial Contest
The work will be administered through the Department of Administrative Services once approved by the grounds design review committee at the Iowa State Capitol. The Statewide Peace Officer Memorial committee has given the approval to proceed. Schemmer's Kelsey Fleenor, Assoc. AIA, and Kira Strong-Gonzalez, Assoc. AIA, were the primary designers.
Peace Officers Memorial
Schemmer's Bill Wedeking, AIA, LEED AP, designed the original memorial plaza. In 2012, the existing monument was relocated to the new memorial plaza. There is an annual ceremony in early May honoring fallen State, County or local peace officers. Names of recently fallen officers are formally added to the existing memorial wall.
