Industry experts weigh in on the best methods to selecting an architect

Schemmer’s Mark Higgins, AIA, was featured in the July 14, 2017 edition of the Midlands Business Journal’s How To Choose an Architect Section, discussing helpful tools and resources to help find an architect that will meet both your needs, as well as your projects.
Higgins referenced utilizing AIA’s website, which provides tools to help clients select an architect at HowDesignWorks.AIA.org.
“Every architecture firm and architect brings their own combination of skills, expertise, interests, and values to its projects,” he said. “It is important to find a firm and architect who is a good match with your goals, your concept of the project, your personality and your budget.”
Higgins recommends if you are having difficulty articulating goals, concepts and budget, it’s often useful to engage a design professional to help define the project – before committing to a final design agreement.
As for the resources, he indicated referrals from colleagues and acquaintances associated with the design and construction industry will help make a short list of potential firms to consider.
“Contact these architects or firms to ask for information, qualifications and references,” Higgins said. “Evaluate the firms in terms of relevant experience, and their track record for timeliness and budget control.”
During discussions, think about the questions the firm asked and if the architect was engaged in developing to design challenges, according to Higgins.
