“Senior continuum care offering everything from theaters to pet-friendly courtyards”

Principal – Senior Project Manager

Schemmer’s Shane Larsen, AIA, NCARB, was featured in the June 15, 2018, edition of the Midlands Business Journal’s Architecture section, discussing today’s trends for senior living facilities and how Schemmer continues to push the envelope when it comes to senior design.

“It is important for designers to be on the forefront of national and regional trends to ensure the project reflects a long-term destination for today’s and tomorrow’s seniors,” he said.

Some of the sustainable design features used in Schemmer’s designs include geothermal, photovoltaic panels, sun-tubes, electric car charging stations and co-gen mechanical plants.

“More and more connectivity is a priority,” Larsen said. ” We expect this to only increase in the future, and planning for such is a must. Some of our more visionary clients are providing ice cream shops, coffee shops, bars and theaters.”

Schemmer has a client offering an interior garden for long-term care residents. Another unique amenity is a nursery for the memory-care residents, he said.

“One of our projects in particular is nearly complete with construction and is featuring 40 independent living apartments, 60 assisted living apartments and 30 memory care units,” Larsen said. ” The project has a shared commons area where some planned or unplanned interactions can happen. An in-house medical clinic is offered as well, which is a great amenity for today’s seniors.”
