Steve Kathol Awarded the ACEC Nebraska Charles Durham Achievement Award
The award honors Charles Durham’s leadership in the engineering profession and his community stewardship through civic involvement. Durham served as chairman and CEO of Henningson, Durham and Richardson (HDR), the Omaha-based international engineering and architectural firm.
Charles Durham Achievement Award
Since 2009, the Charles Durham Achievement Award has recognized individuals who have significantly contributed to the profession through professional societies, community service organizations, and their leadership role at ACEC Nebraska.
Kathol graduated from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering in 1992 and a Master of Science in Structural Engineering in 1994. He began working at Schemmer in 1994 and has climbed the ladder ever since.
Steve has served as president and CEO since 2014 and has served on the board of directors since 2006. He has since implemented an open-book management style where he invites all employees to understand the company’s vision, strategy, and financial progress. Doing so, Steve has created a culture of empowerment and ownership, all while supporting a sense of community inside and outside the walls of Schemmer.
Previous leadership roles also include:
- Schemmer’s Bridge Department Manager
- Schemmer’s Transportation Group Leader
- ACEC Nebraska State Director
- ACEC Nebraska President
- American Society of Civil Engineers Nebraska Chapter President
- ACEC Nebraska National Director
Outside of Schemmer, Kathol keeps his ties to the community strong. He exemplifies this in his commitment to the Boys Town Booster Club and his work as a board member with the Boy Scouts of America Mid-America Council and the ACE Mentor Program of Greater Omaha.
Kathol is also licensed as a professional engineer in nine states.
