Why Architecture Matters: Designing the World We Live In
April 17, 2025 • All, News, People
Celebrating National Architecture Week
Architecture is all around us, shaping how we move through the world each day. From the schools our kids attend to the clinics where we receive care, and from the places we gather in faith and community to the spaces where we live and work, architecture quietly influences how we feel, how we connect, and how we thrive.
This week, we celebrate the people behind those spaces. Our architects and architectural designers bring both creativity and care to every project. They are not just designing for function but also considering how spaces feel. Whether it’s a senior living community that offers comfort and dignity or a K-12 school that sparks learning and connection, their work makes a difference in the lives of the people who use these spaces every day.
“I hope people feel intrigue, wonder, and an appreciation of detail when they walk into a space I’ve helped design,” said Michael Sinclair, Architecture Manager – Lincoln, NE. “Architecture isn’t just about meeting a need. It’s about creating an experience.”
“I hope people feel a sense of completeness, dropping their shoulders and breathing out audibly. Like they’re safe and at ease,” said Liz Stanton, Architect – Sioux Falls, SD.
At Schemmer, we deliver architectural services across a wide range of markets: commercial, education, higher education, K-12, faith-based, healthcare, industrial, multi-family housing, senior living, and projects for federal, state, and local public agencies. Our work looks different in each space, but the goal remains the same. We design places that make life better for the people who use them.
Sometimes, it’s the simplest features that leave the biggest impact. “Any housing project that provides families with a front porch,” said Sinclair, “offers a way for communities to grow and thrive through personal interaction.”
In Sioux Falls, Liz Stanton reflected on The Link, a triage center offering behavioral health crisis support and substance abuse services. “This space has had over 10,000 visits since opening,” she noted. “Without it, people in crisis had limited options. Now, they have a safe place to turn. Architecture made that space possible.”
Why does architecture matter? Our architects say it best:
“It shapes the places we live, work and play,” said Stanton. “If done correctly, we won’t notice it, but it will be quietly enhancing our lives.”
“As our natural world is held in suspension through an endless system of beauty and order,” said Sinclair, “our man-made world should strive for nothing less.”
We’re proud of our architects and architectural designers. Not just for what they build, but for the thought, empathy, and intention behind every design.
