Schemmer Attends Children’s Square U.S.A. Academic Center & Residential Treatment Unit Dedication
Schemmer’s Pat Birch, AIA, LEED AP, and Kelli Walling attended the dedication and celebration of the completion of the Children's Square U.S.A. Academic Center and Residential Treatment Unit in Council Bluffs, Iowa on Tuesday, December 10, 2019. The projects were both funded through the Better Spaces Brighter Futures Capital Campaign. There was a brief program, ribbon-cutting and refreshments served at both the Academic Center and Residential Cottage.
Academic Center
Schemmer was retained to provide design services for the 8,600 SF renovation and 3,200 SF addition to the Academic Center building at Children’s Square U.S.A. The early 20th-Century structure included:
- a complete interior makeover
- new mechanical and electrical systems
- the addition of an automatic sprinkler system
- various ADA improvements
- new windows sized to meet the original masonry openings and reflect the building’s architectural character

Residential Treatment Unit
For their 10-acre Residential Treatment Unit, Schemmer completed:
- a master plan
- existing buildings' analysis
- preliminary designs for improvements
The building is designed as three connected residential cottages. Students live in the cottages, which provide safe environments and teach life skills. The common area, which connects the cottages, includes instructional, activity and counseling spaces.
