Schemmer's Peter Hind, AIA, NCARB, LEED AP, Healthcare Market Leader and Design Aficionado
For more than two decades, Schemmer’s Peter Hind, AIA, NCARB, LEED AP, Healthcare Market Leader and Senior Architect, has been deeply rooted in the City of Lincoln’s landscape and continues to make an impact as he helps buildings evolve and transcend through his personal approach and design strategies.
Hind has been hard at work making clients’ visions a reality in the City of Lincoln and beyond. From dermatology to dentistry and pediatric to oral surgery clinics, as well as numerous other market types, he is delivering projects that are infused with his personal emotion and passion, and a mindset that buildings should give more than they take.
Buildings Should Give More Than They Take
“This is what I try to infuse in my thinking when approaching a design challenge. We should always try to consider multiple strategies to make buildings more resilient, sustainable and active in their ability to generate energy, provide fresh air, give a connection to nature, and we should always strive to design balanced and controlled natural light. We study design in three dimensions and always consider the impact of the natural world – views in and out, the orientation of the sun, wind, sound, and the relationship to existing assets on- and off-site.
An organized plan derived from a client’s program is the foundation of a good project. Secondly, the connection to natural and lasting materials should always be part of design consideration. One of our challenges is to understand and then communicate the use of lasting and beautiful materials. There is an overabundance of materials on the market that are low cost and fast to install, but have limited life and no ability to age and improve over time. We must realize buildings CAN get better as they age. Of course, we should design projects with lasting and resilient materials, focus on low energy use, and strive for energy production, and beauty. However, our highest purpose should be to consider and amplify human health and well-being and we should continually question how our work addresses and combats climate change.”

Renovations and New Construction
Hind believes that new construction has a lot of value and we should aspire to design beautiful and efficient buildings. At the same time, if we don’t embrace and consider repurposing existing buildings, we are never going to have a meaningful and broader impact on the environment.
“Buildings are not static (thankfully), they change and have a life – often never intended by the original design. I feel we have an obligation to utilize our existing building stock in ways that elevate and reinterpret spatial constructs in order to find new meaning for buildings considered obsolete. Our work should not confuse the historic record. We should understand the past, and also strive to employ the best systems and practices to make buildings be the best and most sustainable versions of themselves with the technology we have today.”
